While largely barren and inhospitable, the Distant Planet had many lifeforms (such as Scavenger Mordons), most of them inedible. Spaceman Spiff was stranded here and forced to search for food, eventually finding ice cream sandwiches in a "frozen geyser pit".
This was apparently a metaphor for the cafeteria at Calvin's school.
